UC Irvine Extension Courses Provide Financial Planning Education For A Fiscally Healthy 2007

IRVINE, Calif. – December 21, 2006 – Every year millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions designed to improve their lives. One of the most beneficial resolutions is to establish an effective financial plan – and stick to it. UC Irvine Extension is offering two timely courses – “Survey of Personal Financial Planning” and “Cash Flow Analysis for Investors” – to help consumers turn their New Year’s resolutions and financial dreams into a reality through 2007 and beyond. These courses, which cater to the financial novice, are offered both in a classroom and online format in Jan. 2007.

“Even the most well organized individuals sometimes find it difficult to achieve success when it comes to personal financial goals,” said Lori Munoz-Reiland, director of business, management, legal and information technology at UC Irvine Extension. “Yet, with a little initiative, and the tools and information provided by these courses, success in 2007 is not only possible, but probable.”

Survey of Personal Financial Planning

Forget resolutions. Make a plan. This introductory course provides an overview of how each element of our financial lives impacts the whole and leads to a successful financial plan. Students will learn how to identify and quantify financial objectives, assess strengths and weaknesses, avoid costly mistakes and develop possible solutions to troubling financial issues. Participants will also gain a basic understanding of cash flow, college funding, insurance, taxation, investment analysis, employment benefits, retirement and estate planning. Students will then apply these concepts in a comprehensive approach to case studies that mimic real life.

This class is offered at the UC Irvine Campus from Jan. 9 to March 20 or online from Jan. 8 to April 6.

Cash Flow Analysis for Investors

Considering investing in the New Year? This course teaches the students how to measure and evaluate cash flow from a wide variety of investment situations involving annuities, stocks, bonds, real estate, mortgages, promissory notes, personal and real property leases. It is designed to prepare students with the skills needed to plan, construct and evaluate annuities such as retirement, savings, education and other special purpose funds intended for future use. The course also covers applied concepts involving present and future values, net present values, internal rates of return, discounted cash flow analysis, risk analysis, mortgage analysis and common indices of financial performance. The practical, real-world skills taught are those required in the syllabus of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc.

The classroom version of this course is offered from Jan. 10 to March 14. It can also be taken in an online format from Jan. 8 to March 23.
